UFO spotted near Indira Gandhi International Airport twice

Less than a week after the security agencies raised concerns about terror threat from airborne devices, the sighting of an unidentified flying object (UFO) near the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Sunday triggered panic among the personnel. Officials said all flight operations to and from the airport had to be suspended for about an hour, till the security agencies declared the situation safe.

The UFO was sighted twice, leading to closure of the runway concerned twice.

The drone-like device was first spotted at 7.09 pm, when the pilot of an Air Asia flight, which was approaching the airport for landing, spotted a drone-like flying object in the vicinity and alerted the Air Traffic Control (ATC). The ATC then alerted the Airport Operations Control Centre (AOCC), which roped in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel and the Delhi Police.

Then another pilot, of a China Airlines flight, noticed a flying object at the time of landing and alerted the officials concerned. The flight landed safely and the runway was closed from 11. 20 am to 12.20pm.

"As precaution, the ATC was asked to suspend all flight operations. The entire area was scanned. According to the pilot, the drone was seen on the approach path towards the Dwarka area near the airport. Local police were also alerted, while CISF commandos and Quick Response Teams (QRT) checked the entire area," a senior CISF officer said.

DCP (IGIA) Sanjay Bhatia said a case has been registered in this regard and teams and the local district police has been alerted to trace the drone owner.

This, however, is not the first time that a UFO has been spotted near the airport. Three such incidents came to light in 2016, sending the security agencies into a tizzy. In 2015 as well, two such incidents were reported when on October 27 a suspicious object was spotted over runway 29 by the ATC officials and three days later again on Oct 30 a flying object was spotted over runway 27, thrice before it completely disappeared.
