Close encounters in Pennsylvania?

With Steven Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" hitting theaters Friday, September1, for a one-week run in honor of the film's 40th anniversary, the thought of UFOs visiting Pennsylvania is back in the spotlight.

While UFOs and extraterrestrial visitors to Earth are controversial and highly disputed subjects, there have been reports in Pennsylvania.

The most famous of those reports came in 1965 near the village of Kecksburg, about 30 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. Most folks in and around Kecksburg - and, in and around the UFO community - agree that something came out of the sky and into a wooded hollow near the village, which celebrates the event every July with the Kecksburg UFO Festival.

In an incident with many similarities to whatever took place in Kecksburg, some believe a UFO crashed into a pond at Carbondale in Lackawanna County on Nov. 11, 1974. The town doesn't commemorate it with a festival, but UFO researchers have tracked down some information about the event.

Several other Pennsylvania sightings believed to have been UFOs have been captured on video over the years. These UFO reports have come from Phoenixville, Lower Paxton Township and elsewhere.
