The UFOs in our back yard – 'Maybe it's not a UFO'

Not every sighting has to be an actual or potential alien craft. After all, UFO stands for "unidentified flying object," with the emphasis on unidentified.

So, back in 1985 the late Wade Welch may have seen one of Uncle Sam's experimental aircraft flying around silently and even "stealthily" in the skies over Valley Center.

Back in those days, the skies were considerably darker, because the population here was a lot smaller. That was in the days of President Ronald Reagan and his big push to expand the U.S. military.

In was then that Wade Welch, a lineman for the phone company, saw what may have been a prototype Stealth Bomber.

Valley Center resident Nancy Welch phoned The Roadrunner last week and told me this story:

Wade Welch moved to Valley Center in 1984. He died in 1997. He worked for the phone company. He was an installer of main frame equipment for all the phones in VC.

"He would work during the night shift. He didn't tell me about this when it first happened. He told me a year later," she said. "He was coming up over the grade on Valley Center Road by Ridge Ranch Road. He saw an object at tree line go over. It was only when the Popular Science 1986 issue came out, and he saw what was on the front cover that he told me."

The front cover featured the Stealth Bomber.

Mrs. Welch continued, "He was so certain that he would be made fun over that he didn't tell anybody. A lot of those in the phone company had been in the service. The rumor was that the Navy used Valley Center for experimental stuff. They could fly things around without causing much of a fuss. It makes one wonder how many people saw what they thought was something our government flew? Wade wouldn't tell anybody he saw that for over a year. How many times have you come into Valley Center on the grade and seen something unusual? It always makes me wonder."

It makes us wonder too!

Addition—Manny Gonzalez (Manuel V. Gonzalez) emailed us and said he'd just read the article we ran last issue on his UFO story. He had an addendum: "I forgot to mention I too am a Vietnam Marine vet."  Thanks for your service, Manny.
